Getting a new ornamental geometric tattoo is only the beginning. The healing process is an important part of the final result, especially with large blackwork tattoos, dark shading, geometric patterns, and negative space.

Over the years, I have tested different tattoo aftercare methods. This is the routine I prefer for my tattoos because it is simple, easy to follow, and works well with my technique.

So, if you have just had an ornamental geometric tattoo with me, this is the aftercare routine I recommend.

Why I Prefer a Simple Tattoo Aftercare Routine

There is a lot of tattoo aftercare advice online. You can also ask a friend, another tattoo artist, or find ten different answers on Google.

The problem is that not every method works the same way for every tattoo. For this reason, I prefer my clients to follow one simple routine. It also makes things much easier if you have any questions during the healing process. If something does not look right, I know exactly what you have been doing, and we can understand what is happening more easily.

You do not need a complicated routine. You just need to keep your new tattoo clean, avoid unnecessary irritation, and give your skin time to heal.

The First 24 Hours of Tattoo Aftercare

Carefully remove the bandage after 24 hours.

Before touching your tattoo, wash your hands well. Then gently wash the tattoo with warm water, avoiding very hot water.

I recommend using a neutral, gentle soap. Create some foam with your hands and gently apply it to the entire tattoo without scrubbing or rubbing the skin. After washing, rinse the tattoo completely with warm water. Then gently pat the area dry with a clean towel.

Washing Your New Tattoo

For the first three days, repeat this washing routine two to three times a day. Do not wash it more often than that unless you have a specific reason to do so.

The goal is simple: keep the tattoo clean without constantly irritating the skin.

In addition, try to avoid unnecessary contact with clothing, bags, furniture, or anything else that constantly rubs against the tattoo.

Ice Compresses Can Help Your Tattoo Heal

During the first few days, I also recommend using a clean ice compress three to four times a day.

Keep everything very clean when doing this. Change the area of the compress every five minutes. This can help make the skin feel more comfortable while your tattoo settles.

As always, listen to your body. If something feels wrong or unusually painful, contact me instead of trying to solve the problem yourself.

Starting Moisturizer for Your Ornamental Geometric Tattoo

On the fourth day, continue with the same washing routine. However, you can now start applying a thin layer of moisturizer.

I usually recommend Hustle Butter USA / Hustle Butter Italy for the healing phase.

The important part is not to use too much. A new tattoo does not need a thick layer of cream. Apply just enough to keep the skin comfortable and prevent it from becoming excessively dry. In other words, less is better.

Let Your Tattoo Peel Naturally

At some point, your tattoo will probably start peeling. This is a normal part of the ornamental geometric tattoo aftercare process.

Do not pull the skin.

Do not scratch it.

Do not try to speed up the peeling process.

Let your skin do its job.

Your ornamental geometric tattoo may look different during different stages of healing. The skin can look dry, shiny, darker, lighter, or slightly uneven while everything settles. This does not automatically mean that there is a problem. Give it time.

Keep Your Tattoo Clean and Protected

During healing, cleanliness is important. Try to avoid anything that creates unnecessary friction or irritation. Loose, clean clothing is usually a good choice when possible. Furthermore, avoid constantly touching your tattoo with your hands.

Your tattoo is healing skin, so treat it that way. The same applies when you are working, traveling, training, or simply going through your normal day. A little extra attention during the first days can make the whole healing process much easier.

What if I Have Questions About My Tattoo?

This is one of the main reasons I prefer my clients to follow the same aftercare routine. If you have a question, contact me first.

You do not need to compare ten different aftercare methods online or ask five friends what they did with their tattoos. Every tattoo and every person’s skin can behave differently.

Therefore, if you are unsure about something during the healing process, send me a message. If possible, keep me updated with photos as your tattoo heals. That way, I can follow the process with you and help you understand what is happening.

If you notice signs that concern you, such as increasing redness, severe pain, significant swelling, pus, fever, or other unusual symptoms, seek medical advice promptly.

Taking Care of an Ornamental Geometric Tattoo

Large ornamental geometric tattoos need patience. My work often combines solid black areas, dark shading, negative space, geometric structures, and strong lines. Because of that, the way the tattoo heals matters just as much as the tattoo session itself.

Good tattoo aftercare will not change the design, but it can help your skin heal properly and allow the tattoo to settle naturally.

Most importantly, do not rush it. Your skin needs time.

Coming to Rome for Your Tattoo

Many of my clients travel for their tattoos. Some come from other parts of Italy, while others travel from across Europe or the United States. Today, I work in Rome, Italy, and I love the idea of people coming to Rome specifically for their tattoo.

You come for the tattoo, but you also get to experience Rome while you are here.

If you are planning a large ornamental geometric tattoo, a full sleeve, leg, back, bodysuit, cover-up, or another major project, you can contact me to discuss your idea and the best way to approach the project.

And once the tattoo is finished, there is still one more important part:
Let it heal.
Take your time.
And let the tattoo become part of you.

A tattoo isn’t just ink on skin. It’s an ornament, a piece of art designed to transform.

But what if the real beauty of a tattoo isn’t just in the design, but in the way it becomes part of you — part of the skin that holds it?

This isn’t about trends or what’s popular. It’s about something deeper.
It’s about creating art that moves with you, breathes with you, and becomes an extension of your own essence.

To me, every tattoo is an ornament.

A symbol, an element, an animal, a character, whatever it is…
It can carry meaning, intention, or concept — and often that’s its main “function.”

But regardless of that, I see it as something that ornaments the skin.
That’s my main intention with tattooing: to ornament the body.

I choose elements that attract me visually and aesthetically.
Usually things that naturally have movement — like leaves, flowers, water, fire…
I’m drawn to them.

The movement and flow of these elements, combined with the body’s natural form, seem to strengthen each other.
The drawing gains more life through the body, and the body gains new shapes and motion through the drawing.

The same design on paper doesn’t have that same energy. It’s the skin that gives it rhythm.

That’s why I choose elements that — to me — help bring this flow and highlight the body’s natural beauty.
I mix them with symmetry (or the lack of it), repetition, solid black areas, and sometimes other figurative shapes that resonate with me.

But I’ll talk more about that in future posts.
Today, I’m focusing on what I consider ornament.

What is the “ornamental” style?

I call my style ornamental.
Not sure if it’s the right word — or if it’s even possible to sum up a whole style in just one word.

I also don’t believe every tattoo artist needs to label their work.
But I respect those who do, and I get how it can help explain things in some situations.

For me, the word ornamental makes sense for 2 reasons:

Visually, I use a lot of elements that come from the world of ornaments — inspired by jewelry, architecture, clothing, decoration, symmetry…

But the main reason is something else: to me, a tattoo is already an ornament. It may or may not carry symbolic, spiritual, or emotional meaning… But what truly matters to me is the aesthetic result that carries my visual language. That’s why, even when I fill an area with solid black, use geometric shapes, or draw a simple leaf — my goal is always the same: to make that piece of skin more beautiful, stronger, more elegant — in my own way.

I see every tattoo as an ornamental tattoo
